Lead Lab Technician – Spokane, WA

This is a full time hourly position.

We are seeking a Lead Laboratory Technician with initiative, flexibility, and a positive attitude. The Lead Lab Technician will assist in communicating findings and reporting discrepancies to the Quality/Food Safety Manager & mill team. This individual will also assist in the implementation of corrective & preventative actions as needed. Primary responsibilities include the accurate performance of laboratory tests to determine wheat & flour quality as well as conformance to specifications in a fast-paced laboratory environment. It is the expectation that the Lead Lab Technician will actively participate in continuous improvement objectives in order to meet or exceed customer requirements. This position reports directly to the Quality/Food Safety Manager.

Principal Job Duties:

  • 60% - Perform analysis of raw materials, in-process product, & final product samples, including collection of samples from the manufacturing environment as needed. Utilize specialized tests to determine product consistency & performance: dough rheology, analytical parameters using primary methods for moisture & ash content, NIR spectroscopy, & Falling Number, etc.

  • 20% - Trend & analyze data generated to assure processes & products are meeting required specifications, including routine data entry into laboratory data management systems. Communicate findings appropriately and jointly work with mill team to find & implement solutions.Make ship/no ship decisions.Generate COA’s as required.

  • 20% - Calibrate & maintain accuracy of all testing equipment in both the laboratory & elevator. Submit samples to internal & 3 rd party laboratories as required by the sampling schedule. Conduct instrument troubleshooting & repair.


  • 1+ year experience in food industry quality assurance, baking industry, agribusiness, or science related industry.

  • Strong attention to detail, commitment to accuracy, & high sense of customer focus

  • Ability to handle stress and pressure while managing multiple tasks

  • Effective written & verbal communication skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications

  • Ability to work overtime & weekends as needed


  • Associates degree

  • Bakery and/or grain science knowledge

  • Mechanical aptitude

  • Understanding of root cause analysis
