Inland Northwest Health Services Groundkeeper Specialist in Spokane, Washington

SUMMARY STATEMENT & PURPOSE Under minimal direction from the Facilities Manager, the Grounds Specialist will maintain a safe, organized, and clean landscape for St. Luke’s Rehabilitation Institute. Primary responsibilities include creating and maintaining the landscape design for facility, applying pesticides and fertilizers as needed, irrigation system installation and maintenance, and maintaining water fall pumps, filters, and chemicals. Other duties to include preservation of grounds including picking up debris, cutting and trimming grass, raking leaves, and during all seasons maintain driveways, parking lots, and walkways. In addition, some minor facilities maintenance work may be performed.

  • Ability to read, write and speak English and follow oral and written instructions

  • Must possess and maintain the WSDA Commercial Applicator pesticide license

  • Valid Washington State driver’s license with acceptable driving record and the ability to be insured by INHS auto insurance carrier.


  • 3-5 years of experience in landscaping

  • Basic carpentry experience

  • Experience fixing mechanical equipment, such as, power tools, mowers, motor maintenance

SPECIFIC PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES- Allfunctions are essential functions unless otherwise noted.

  • Assists Facility Engineering with minor maintenance and repair

  • Provides grounds maintenance in all seasons.

  • Cuts and maintains lawns and/or grass.

  • Rakes and maintains leaves, plants, flowers, trees or shrubs.

  • Determines the appropriate plants or shrubs for walkways or garden areas including, develop, redevelop, and landscape undeveloped areas.

  • Assists with snow and ice removal.

  • Diagnose plants, trees, shrubs, and lawn for diseases and aging problems. Remove problem vegetation and/or apply pesticides and fertilizers as needed (license is required).

  • Responsible for meeting the requirement to possess the WSDA Commercial Applicators pesticide license required for the position.

  • Install and maintain irrigation system, including sprinkler heads, pipes, and sprinkler control system valves, timers, etc. areas as needed.

  • Assess appropriate watering schedule based on season, temperatures, and weather conditions to maintain healthy vegetation.

  • Maintain a clean and safe outdoor environment for all patients, staff, and visitors.

  • Control of weeds in lawn, shrubs beds, flower beds, parking lots, and other areas surrounding the facility through the application of herbicides.

  • Maintain water fall pumps, filters, and chemicals.

  • Responsible for maintenance of all landscaping tools, power equipment (changing oil, filters, sharpening, etc.), and proper storage of chemicals and products.

  • Writes and submits purchase orders for job specific products.

  • Performs all duties in a safe and efficient manner.


  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, and squat for prolonged periods.

  • Ability to push and pull objects, unassisted on a frequent basis.

  • Ability to frequently lift objects up to 30 pounds, occasionally up to 50 pounds, unassisted.

  • Ability to frequently carry up to 20 pounds, occasionally up to 50 pounds, unassisted.

  • Work is primarily completed outdoors, in all types of weather.
